KY/TN Water Professionals Conference
Winner of the 2023 Best Mid-Size Water Treatment Facility & Best Mid-Size Distribution System in Kentucky
The City of Somerset is very fortunate and fairly unique because it owns many public services, like the water department.
Lake Cumberland supplies all the citizens of Somerset and Pulaski County with all of its fresh water needs.
As a commitment to continuous improvement, the department has built a new treatment plant, more water lines and storage tanks. The city has also recently added more pumping capacity and purchased new equipment.
The City of Somerset is served by two wastewater facilities: the Otis B. Chaney Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), also called Pitman Creek WWTP, and the Sinking Creek Pretreatment Facility.
An extensive study showed that a facultative lagoon, which is a type of waste stabilization pond, would provide the best method of treatment, so one was installed. An additional benefit of this lagoon is that toxicity may be reduced at the Sinking Creek plant, improving the Chaney WWTP to meet monitoring requirements.
A new screening structure and septage receiving station were also installed as a part of this project. The WWTP includes the following processes: screening, influent pumping, facultative lagoon, primary clarification, activated sludge, secondary clarification, flow monitoring, sludge thickening, aerobic and anaerobic digesters and drying beds.
